PROFILE NAME: NOAH'S VETERINARY AND BOARDING RESORT.

Our Rehabilitation program is led by Dr. Karen Hamilton and veterinary technician Nikki Renko. In 2010 they attended an accredited course in Canine Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee's Veterinary School.
Dr. Hamilton provides physical evaluation, injury treatment and conditioning regimens for canine (and feline) athletes, show dogs, and companion animals. Having shown dogs and conducted numerous orthopedic surgeries for over 20 years, she understands the need for a rehabilitation and therapy facility in this area.
Nikki has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Bowie University and has volunteered for many years at the National Aquarium in Baltimore's rehabilitation department.
Together they are happy to be providing a facility with a wide array of services and modalities that is geared towards improving the health and well-being of your pet. Along with the rest of the Noah's Ark team they look forward to providing quality customer service for both our human and furry friends!

Hydrotherapy can be used for conditioning and weight loss as well as rehabilitation. Rehabilitating and animal with water has many benefits such as strengthening peripheral and cardiac muscles. Aquatic therapy is proven to allow active muscle contraction with minimal weight bearing on joints and bones. Our treadmill has forward and reverse motion with dual hydro jets used for massaging or resistance.
INDICATIONS FOR HYDROTHERAPY
Contractures |
Muscle weakness |
Neurological Impairment |
Muscle spasms |
Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis |
Weight loss |
Sub acute and chronic soft tissue injuries |
Postoperal Orthopedics |

The Class IV laser allows for deeper penetration, increases the treatment options and shortens the recovery time. Patients respond and relax immediately!! From post trauma pain, chronic arthritis, post surgical pain, to wound healing, this laser will do it all.
INDICATIONS FOR LASER HEALING THERAPY
Decreases pain |
Increases healing |
Improved nerve function |
Promotes granulation and epithelial |
Decreases inflammation and edema |
Improved vascular activity |
Reduces fibrous (scar) tissue formation |
Trigger points and acupuncture |

Therapeutic ultrasound is a great modality to be used for both pos-operative surgical rehabilitation cases as well as show or agility dogs. The ultrasound increases the extensibility of the collagen which restores and even increases muscle length and improves its efficiency and helps with bio mechanics.
INDICATIONS FOR THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND
Decreases pain |
Experimental in wound healing and fracture healing |
| Decreases muscle spasms | Calcific tendonitis |
Increases blood flow/metabolic rate/tissue healing
|
Increases extensibility of collagen (therefore increases range of motion and decreases stiffness)
|

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is the application of a mild electrical current to elicit a muscle contraction. Utilized post operatively (non-weight bearing), muscle atrophy, or selective muscle strengthening. Nerve stimulation (TENS) is used to assist in controlling pain through the release of endorphins.
INDICATIONS FOR NEUROMUSCULAR ELECTRICAL STIMULATION
Enhance muscle performance |
Increases strength |
Increases range of motion |
Pain control |
Muscle re-education/conditioning |
Reduction of edema |
Muscle re-education/conditioning |
|

Many musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions can result in weakness, pain, decreased range of motion, loss of coordination, decreased endurance and difficulty with normal daily activities. Some of our patients simply want to increase muscle mass for the show ring. There are many indications for therapeutic exercises and pieces of equipment that one can utilize to accomplish this. Noah's Ark Veterinary and Boarding Resort carries many different types of therapeutic exercise equipment such as: Physioballs, Cavaletti, Therabands and Balance Boards.
GOALS AND BENEFITS OF THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE
Improves the active pain free range of motion |
Improves daily function |
Improves the use of limbs and reduces lameness
|
Helps prevent further injury
|
Improves muscle mass and core muscle strengthening
|
Enhanced performance and endurance
|
|
Improves Proprioception |
Facilitates increased recovery rate |
Improves quality of movement
